They set the standard for all subsequent pairs of siblings to play the piano. Even today, their musical and analytical acuity and intellectual insight remain unrivalled. The highly talented musicians studied with the legendary pianist Eduard Erdmann, who described the brothers as 'ingenious'. What is particularly fascinating about their playing is the lucid, transparent sound. An American critic summed it up succinctly: ‘One pianist in two bodies’. They inspired numerous contemporary composers to write new, intricately difficult pieces, while at the same time interpreting the works of the classical and romantic repertoire clearly, consistently and without superfluous sentimentality.

Between 1959 and 1983, they recorded numerous albums for Deutsche Grammophon, performing the works of composers such as Bartók, Brahms, Debussy, Dvořák, Ravel and Schubert, as well as Kagel, Ligeti and B. A. Zimmermann. These recordings are now available for the first time as an 18 CD Original Jackets Collection, which includes three CD premieres. Saint-Saëns' 'Carnival of the Animals' is featured in three versions: English, German and a purely musical rendition. Additional recordings the Philips, ECM and Koch Schwann labels are also available, as are live recordings from the Lockenhaus festival. The portrait is completed by liner notes from Peter Uehling and Markus Kettner, as well as numerous rare and previously unpublished photos.

Tracklisting:
CD 1
Bartók: Sonata for 2 Pianos and Percussion
Stravinsky: Concerto for 2 Pianos; Sonata for 2 Pianos

CD 2 - 4
Brahms:
Hungarian Dances
Sonata for 2 Pianos in F Minor, Op.
Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56b
16 Waltzes, Op. 39;
Souvenir de la Russie; Variations For Four Hands On A Theme By Schumann, Op. 23

CD 5 - 6
Debussy:
En blanc et noir, CD 142; Petite Suite for Piano (4 Hands), L. 65
6 Épigraphes antiques
Ravel:
Ma mère l'oye, Suite, M. 60
Rapsodie espagnole, M. 54

CD 7
Dvořák: Slavonic Dances, Opp. 46 & 72 for Piano 4 Hands

CD 8
Kagel: 1898 for Children's Voices and Instruments

CD 9
Ligeti: 3 Pieces for 2 Pianos
Zimmermann: Perspectives, Music for an Imaginary Ballet for 2 Pianos; Monologe for 2 Pianos

CD 10
Messiaen: Quatuor pour la fin du temps
Dünser: Tage- und Nachtbücher

CD 11
Saint-Saëns: Le carnaval des animaux, R. 125

CD 12
Schubert: Divertissement à la hongroise, D. 818
Beethoven: Trio for Piano, Flute & Bassoon in G Major, WoO 37

CD 13 -14
Schubert:
Arpeggione Sonata in A Minor, D. 821; Introduction & Variations, D. 802
Grand Duo in C Major, D. 812; Fantasy in F Minor, D. 940

CD 15
Vieuxtemps: Pieces for Violin and Piano, Vol. II

CD 16
Zimmermann: Présence; Intercomunicazione
Pousseur: Mobiles, Pour 2 Pianos
Boulez: Structures, Livre I pour deux pianos

CD 17
Bizet: Jeux d'enfants, WD 56
Milhaud: Scaramouche for 2 Pianos, Op. 165b
Fauré: Dolly Suite, Op. 56

CD 18
Webern / Xenakis / Kagel / Zimmermann / Penderecki / Brown / Yun

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0701/2417/5395/files/Alfons-Kontarsky_Recordings-on-Deutsche-Grammophon_18-CD-Box_s520299_o7914157_a620945_v13816458.aa95920e.webp?v=1773652350
