Six months after his first album for Impulse! Records, "Four For Trane", saxophonist Archie Shepp recorded another album in 1965 at the Rudy van Gelder Studios in New Jersey, partly with a sextet and partly with a trio. In addition to original compositions, "Fire Music" contains recordings of the standards "Prelude to a Kiss" and "The Girl from Ipanema". The track "Malcolm, Malcolm Semper Malcolm" is dedicated to Malcolm X, while "Los Olvidados" is a tribute to the 1950 film of the same name.
