Saxophonist David Murray has been at the forefront of the international jazz scene for 50 years. With his ensembles - from his octet to the World Saxophone Quartet to his big band - he has combined modern jazz and the avant-garde with influences from the entire spectrum of jazz. Now he is back with his brand-new quartet. 

For his debut on Impulse! Records, Murray was inspired by music that is older than humanity: birdsong. "Birdly Serenade" was created at an artist retreat in the Adirondack Mountains, surrounded by lakes, forests and endless skies. The album was recorded in the famous Van Gelder Studio and contains eight compositions written by Murray, two of which are performed by rising singing star Ekep Nkwelle.
