The Point Music Editions vinyl series launches in January 2027 with Philip Glass’ Low Symphony: David Bowie and Brian Eno’s music, transformed through Philip Glass’ unmistakable orchestral imagination.
Originally released by Point Music in 1993, Philip Glass’ Low Symphony was the composer’s first symphony and a bold orchestral response to David Bowie and Brian Eno’s landmark 1977 recording Low. Commissioned by the Brooklyn Philharmonic and conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, the three-movement work draws on themes from ‘Subterraneans’, ‘Some Are’ and ‘Warszawa’, transforming them through Glass’ unmistakable musical language into what he described as a genuine collaboration between his music and Bowie’s.
The new vinyl edition arrives at a uniquely resonant moment in January 2027, marking Philip Glass’ 90th birthday, what would have been David Bowie’s 80th and the 50th anniversary of Bowie’s original Low album, creating a unique convergence of anniversaries around this landmark recording and Glass’ symphonic response to it.
Performed by the Brooklyn Philharmonic under Dennis Russell Davies, Low Symphony is cut for the first time at 45rpm over three sides allows for wider dynamics, clearer fidelity, better high-frequency tracking. Lacquers are cut at Emil Berliner Studios, in the same building where Bowie recorded ‘Heroes’ — a remarkable connection between the music’s inspiration and the craft behind this edition.
With one movement per side, this Point Music vinyl edition features an etching of the album cover on the fourth side.
