For his Hyperion debut, pianist Luís Duarte records works by a major figure of 20th-century Portuguese music: Fernando Lopes-Graça.
Lopes-Graça was a composer, pianist, conductor, lecturer, ethnomusicologist and political campaigner, tireless in his mission to (re-)establish authentic Portuguese folk music in spite of the hostile state environment of the ruling Estado Novo. Appropriately, the album ends with the ‘Glorious journey’, which represents the 1974 Portuguese Revolution, in which the nationalist ruling government was overthrown in a coup and Portugal was returned to freedom and democracy.
Luís Duarte is a professor at the Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho and was awarded the ‘Prémios Play’ (best classical music album in Portugal) in 2022. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician with musicians like Ian Bostridge, Christoph Prégardien and Pedro Burmester.
