Cupertinos are opening an important new chapter in their groundbreaking, multi-year journey of discovery through the buried treasures of Portuguese Renaissance polyphony.
“Buried” is the apt word here: much of this music was destroyed in the devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755, and the catalog of King John IV's music library from 1649 suggests that we have only scratched the surface of what was lost.
For over three decades, composer Francisco Garro directed the prestigious Royal Chapel in Lisbon and published important choir books, from which the masses and motets recorded here have now been reconstructed.
Cupertino's acclaimed album of polyphony by Cardoso won the Gramophone Award in 2019, followed by albums dedicated to Duarte Lobo, Cristo, and Magalhães—but this latest release is perhaps the most astonishing discovery yet.
This album consists almost entirely of world premiere commercial recordings.
