Do Frank Zappa and John Cage really belong on the classical piano album? To anyone who might be harbouring doubts, the answer is an emphatic ‘yes’, especially when the pianist is Marc-André Hamelin, whose own Hexensabbat brings to a riotous conclusion a programme of music—and instruments, in the case of Cage’s prepared piano—which radically disrupts Western traditions.
