Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album

    Vinyl 2LP
    €49,99

    Release date: June 29, 2018

Unknown until 2004 and unheard until their eventual release in 2018, these recordings from 1963 capture the intensity of Coltrane’s great quartet and hints at the boundary-stretching brilliance to come, while they reach in new, exploratory directions that were to affect the trajectory of jazz from that point forward. In the liner notes Sonny Rollins describes the discovery of this session as like 'finding a new room in the great pyramid'

Featuring Coltrane’s Classic Quartet — McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums) — the session was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and produced by Bob Thiele immediately before they headed off for the last night of a two-week residency at New York’s Birdland, on March 6, 1963. The following day they were back in the same studio to record John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman.

The 2-LP version of the album features all 14 takes and includes a poster and extensive liner notes by historian Ashley Kahn.
