Nala Sinephro releases her first original soundtrack for Benny Safdie's film “The Smashing Machine,” which premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival (with a 15-minute standing ovation!) ahead of its official theatrical release on October 3. The film tells the story of legendary mixed martial arts and UFC fighter Mark Kerr. The film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Oscar nominee Emily Blunt. The film score was composed, produced, arranged, mixed, and mastered by Nala Sinephro. Also featured are her longtime collaborators James Mollison, Nubya Garcia, Lyle Barton, Dwayne “Wonky Logic” Kilvington, Morgan Simpson, Natcyet Wakili, Mark Mollison, and Sheila Maurice-Grey. The London-based orchestra Orchestrate, which provided the strings for Sinephro's highly acclaimed album “Endlessness” in 2024, also contributes.
Although Sinephro's music—meditative, ethereal, and powerful—may seem paradoxical for a wrestling story, Mark's story resonated with Sinephro, who picked up on the hidden gentleness and emotions of the story. The film score still sounds unmistakably like Nala Sinephro—spacious with even warmth, beautiful string arrangements, light themes, leisurely harp—but has been intensified to match the themes of the film: pressure, fear of loss, addiction, pain, volcanic relationships, and the feeling of elation.
