Hayley Williams is a three-time GRAMMY Award winner, singer, songwriter, and musician best known as the frontwoman of the legendary rock band Paramore. After fulfilling their contract with Atlantic Records for more than 20 years—a contract Williams signed as a teenager—Paramore announced in December 2023 that they were finally an independent band. This surprise collection is being released by Hayley Williams herself on her new label, Post Atlantic, and showcases her full range.
Williams wrote, played, and recorded a number of different instrumental parts, with longtime collaborators Brian Robert Jones and Joey Howard contributing across the project and Jim-E Stack contributing to “True Believer.”
“Mirtazapine” is a love letter to antidepressants in the style of late '90s alternative rock, while in “Glum” she undermines her own voice with impressive effects through vocal presets as the track meditates on loneliness.
Other highlights include “Whim,” a catchy Americana earworm whose songwriting ties back to her roots in Nashville, and “Ice in My OJ,” a thoroughly modern track that combines sharp production with some of Williams' most biting and humorous lyrics to date.
Longtime Paramore fans may quickly recognize the chorus of “Ice In My OJ,” as Williams first sang it in 2004 on “Jumping Inside” by the Mammoth City Messengers. The collection captures all the dynamism Williams has already shown throughout her career and collaborations. At their core, these songs are the work of an extremely talented artist with an insatiable, genre-spanning appetite for music and creative discovery.
These songs are Williams' third release as a solo artist. In the COVID era, she released two exceptional albums - “Petals For Armor” (2020) and “Flowers for Vases” (2021).
Both albums were beautiful and haunting meditations on loss, contrasting with the energetic and fast-paced power she displays with Paramore. “The album—which embodies vulnerability and transformative growth—reveals a more mature and introspective side of Williams,” Pitchfork wrote of Petals, continuing, “Her voice is undoubtedly the standout feature...rough and gentle, dangerous yet warm,” and declaring that the minimalist production makes this “a conscious new beginning.”
